FAMILY WEEKEND MOVIE @ SM CINEMAS ON AUG. 20 AND 21 FEATURES “SAMMY 2: ESCAPE FROM PARADISE”

SM Cinemas’ featured movie for their monthly Family Movie Day this August 20 and 21 features two lovable turtles in “Sammy 2: Escape from Paradise.”
In this new film, the animals are captured to be specimens in a huge aquarium in a theme park. Captured and held captive in a state-of-the-art underwater restaurant-aquarium somewhere in the Middle East, Sammy and Ray devise an ingenious plan to free everyone and get back to their families.

“Sammy 2:Escape from Paradise” is directed by Ben Stassen, noted for using other specialist cinematographic techniques such as Showscan, Iwerks, VistaVision and whose first feature film “Fly Me to the Moon,” is the first animated feature completely produced in 3D relief.

Stassen shares the challenges on working on a limited budget for the movie, but has achieved a visual wonder in “Sammy 2: Escape from Paradise.” “The biggest challenge for a shoot like SAMMY 2, where you have to be efficient whilst respecting the constraints of the budget, is to ensure that the information regarding the film and its different elements circulates in a fluid way between departments. In fact, whatever film you’re working on – live action, TV series or documentary – you are dealing with an extremely fragmented process. But this is even more the case for a feature-length animation. It is complicated because there are huge amounts of data that have to go from one team to another, and there are several stages to validate before you get the final result. In all, it’s around two years of work,” says Stassen.

His co-director Vincent Kesteloot, further enthuses on the characters’ continued journey. “What I liked was how Ben Stassen’s story managed to preserve the charm of the heroes of the first film, “Sammy’s Adventures,” whilst taking a different direction in the second. In this new film, the animals are captured to be specimens in a huge aquarium in a theme park. We still have the variety of different sets as we did in in the first, but the story structure is no longer that of an odyssey. Our heroes no longer have to abandon each new character they meet on their travels. This allows one to widen out the characters and observe how they evolve. This second chapter introduces many more new appealing and powerful characters and a whole new generation of turtles!”

PAUL BETTANY TAKES DIRECTOR’S CHAIR IN HARD-HITTING POWERFUL MOVIE “SHELTER”

Best known to worldwide audience as Jarvis/Vision in the blockbuster Marvel movies “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and in the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War,” Paul Bettany, who has also rendered an unforgettable performance in “A Beautiful Mind,” takes the director’s chair in his (directorial) debut in the movie “Shelter” which he also wrote, about two homeless people and their harrowing plight to survive.

“Shelter” stars Bettany’s wife, Jennifer Connelly opposite Anthony Mackie, who has also appeared in “Avengers” movies as Sam Wilson aka Falcon. In “Shelter” Connelly takes on the character of Hannah while Mackie stars as Tahir. Both come from two different worlds. But when their lives intersect, they’re at the same place: homeless on the streets of New York.

Bettany’s directorial debut is a love letter to the great New York dramas of the 1970s, “Shelter” is an unmerciful story of loss, love, sacrifice, redemption and, ultimately, hope.

“The germ of the idea for Shelter came from two seemingly unrelated places. First, I wanted to explore the concept of loss. And how we respond to it. Someone you love is there one day, and then they’re gone,” introduces Bettany of his concept for the film.

At the backdrop of New York, Connelly as Hanna is a heroin addict and wanders the streets day in, day out begging for money while holding out a sign that says ‘I used to be someone.” Nigerian immigrant Tahir whose visa has already expired performs on the streets drumming on plastic buckets to draw people in to drop in coins and bills. Their lives began to intertwine when Tahir spies his stolen jacket around her waist and eventually saves her from killing herself.

In a review from The List (UK) by Eddie Harrison, he notes that the role of Connelly is happening in real life. “Connelly’s captivating work elevates the material several notches; radiating both desperation and hope in equal measure, Hannah’s situation is heartbreaking and real, and a scene where she cleans herself up after a degrading act of sexual violence is utterly indelible,” he states.

Bettany further notes that the movie’s theme also touches on the brutal part of being human. “So I wanted to write a film that spoke to loss, and I wanted to focus on two characters, from as different backgrounds as possible—there is conflict inherent in that—whose back- stories are slowly revealed over the course of the film. Two characters whose present is so complicated by past loss, that their future is always in doubt.”

“Shelter” opens March 26 in cinemas nationwide from CrystalSky Multimedia.

NAILING IT IN THE ROMANTIC COMEDY “ACCIDENTAL LOVE” [R13]

“Accidental Love” is a wacky comedy with an underlying theme of health care, starring Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhall, James Marsden, Catherine Keener, Kirstie Alley, Tracy Morgan and Malinda Williams.
Alice Eckle (Biel), a somewhat naïve roller-skating waitress in a small Indiana town, is about to get engaged to her trooper boyfriend, Scott (Marsden). At the fancy Gondola restaurant when Alice has an engagement ring on her finger, a clumsy workman accidentally shoots her in the head with a nail from his nail gun.

At the hospital, the doctors cannot operate to remove the nail because Alice does not have health insurance and the nail is not life threatening so its removal does not qualify as an emergency. If the nail shifts to a different position, however, it might influence Alice’s behavior in unpredictable ways such as increasing her sex drive or causing her to speak Portuguese.

They hold a fundraiser to gather money for Alice’s operation but fail in raising the $100,000 necessary for surgery. Alice does however befriend two people with their own medical issues: Reverend Norm who suffers from priapism and Keyshawn who suffers from a rectal prolapse. Then Alice’s Aunt Rita proposes a solution to the problem. Rita is a vet and has operated on cows before. Confident in her surgical abilities, she tries operating on Alice but fails to remove the nail - causing Alice even more distress.

Watching TV, Alice sees her congressman, Howard Birdwell, a charming but rather clueless fellow, visiting a bunch of kids and promising them colored glue. In congress Howard has vowed “to help all the people,” and might just be Alice’s last chance to get the nail out.

And so it goes… Alice and Birdwell fall in love as Trooper Scott shows up to rescue his beloved. Birdwell however escapes to a man’s retreat to center himself. Though the congressman has seemingly double- crossed Alice a second time, he secretly attaches a small health care rider to a different bill thereby finally allowing her to resolve her medical issues. Then with everybody healthy, they all celebrate at Keyshawn’s wedding.

Victor’s latest grisly “experiment” is the re-animated corpse of a sadistic madman and Naihla’s most recent find is the cursed mummy of an evil pharaoh. Victor and Naihla have a crush on each other and they date. Meanwhile Professor Walton (Boomer Tibbs), who is chief of department where Naihla works, accidentally releases Usekara's soul and is possessed by him. He kills his assistant Isaac (Robert MacNaughton) and his blood awakes the Mummy. Then Walton lures his student Lenora (Stefanie Merola) and the Mummy eats her heart. Frankenstein's monster (Constantin Tripes) is reanimated and Victor is surprised with his capacity. But soon both monsters want Naihla: Frankenstein's creature to force Victor to transfer his brain to a new body and the Mummy believes she is the sorcerer that trapped his soul and wants Naihla to call off the spell.
