FAMILY WEEKEND MOVIE @ SM CINEMAS ON AUG. 20 AND 21 FEATURES “SAMMY 2: ESCAPE FROM PARADISE”

SM Cinemas’ featured movie for their monthly Family Movie Day this August 20 and 21 features two lovable turtles in “Sammy 2: Escape from Paradise.”
In this new film, the animals are captured to be specimens in a huge aquarium in a theme park. Captured and held captive in a state-of-the-art underwater restaurant-aquarium somewhere in the Middle East, Sammy and Ray devise an ingenious plan to free everyone and get back to their families.

“Sammy 2:Escape from Paradise” is directed by Ben Stassen, noted for using other specialist cinematographic techniques such as Showscan, Iwerks, VistaVision and whose first feature film “Fly Me to the Moon,” is the first animated feature completely produced in 3D relief.

Stassen shares the challenges on working on a limited budget for the movie, but has achieved a visual wonder in “Sammy 2: Escape from Paradise.” “The biggest challenge for a shoot like SAMMY 2, where you have to be efficient whilst respecting the constraints of the budget, is to ensure that the information regarding the film and its different elements circulates in a fluid way between departments. In fact, whatever film you’re working on – live action, TV series or documentary – you are dealing with an extremely fragmented process. But this is even more the case for a feature-length animation. It is complicated because there are huge amounts of data that have to go from one team to another, and there are several stages to validate before you get the final result. In all, it’s around two years of work,” says Stassen.

His co-director Vincent Kesteloot, further enthuses on the characters’ continued journey. “What I liked was how Ben Stassen’s story managed to preserve the charm of the heroes of the first film, “Sammy’s Adventures,” whilst taking a different direction in the second. In this new film, the animals are captured to be specimens in a huge aquarium in a theme park. We still have the variety of different sets as we did in in the first, but the story structure is no longer that of an odyssey. Our heroes no longer have to abandon each new character they meet on their travels. This allows one to widen out the characters and observe how they evolve. This second chapter introduces many more new appealing and powerful characters and a whole new generation of turtles!”

Pioneer Films - WORST SEA DISASTER AND SHARK ATTACK AT PHILIPPINE SEA IN “USS INDIANAPOLIS”

Nicolas Cage stars in “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” (aka “USS Indianapolis: Disaster at Philippine Sea”) that relives the worst sea disaster in the history of the US Navy and the inspiring true story of men of courage.

Starring alongside Cage in the movie are Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter, Brian Presley and Cody Walker aboard the USS Indianapolis as it race across the Pacific at 29 knots, USS Indianapolis reached Pearl Harbor in record time on July 19, unaccompanied, as ordered for her clandestine mission. She arrived at Tinian on July 26, and delivered her secret cargo, components of and the enriched uranium for the atomic bomb intended for Hiroshima.

At 14 minutes past midnight on July 30, she was struck on her starboard bow by two Type 95 torpedoes from the Japanese submarine. The explosions caused massive damage. The Indianapolis took on a heavy list, and settled by the bow. Twelve minutes later, she rolled completely over, then her stern rose into the air, and she plunged down. Some 300 of the 1,196-crew members went down with the ship. With few lifeboats and many without Lifejackets, the remainder of the crew was set adrift in the Philippine Sea. In the dead of night they were plunged into the open ocean battered, wounded, burned, covered in oil, having watched many of their shipmates die, barely surviving themselves, and scared beyond comprehension. The light of dawn only confirmed the gravity of their situation. They would be rescued once they did not arrive in the Philippines as scheduled that morning. However, the USS Indianapolis’ mission was still covert. The remaining crew of USS Indianapolis was left in the open ocean, alone.

The Philippine Sea is inhabited by mako sharks, blue sharks, oceanic whitetips and silky sharks. All are known to be opportunistic and aggressive feeders. The sharks began eating the dead on the first day. They seem to appear greater numbers late in the afternoon. In the quiet stillness of the night, survivor accounts recall hearing a scream off in the distance that meant someone was being attacked. The sharks had begun to take the living.

Although the USS Indianapolis (CA35) died at sea, the memory of her crew lives. Through the efforts of the USS Indianapolis (CA35) Second Watch, the memory of the Indianapolis will be preserved; her history, story, feeling and experiences shared. The Second Watch became an instrumental part of the project, providing historical facts, records and photos from survivors and their families. Most importantly, they provided a connection to survivors still living.

Says Cage, “My impression on meeting these survivors, was that they were, they are, remarkably strong willful people. The fact they are still with us . . . We wanted to honor them. They are true heroes.”

Richard P. Stephens, was the other living survivor that traveled to Mobile where the filming took place. Seizing the opportunity of an open bench seat, Cage sat down with Stephens as though he was chatting with an old friend. In retrospect, Rionda Del Castro felt the entire experience of writing, producing, editing and selling “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” was an enormous endeavor. “However, nothing compares to the real crew members plight. The horrors of what they went through, all of them, survivors, those lost at sea, and their families. To welcome them to our set was a privilege. I am producing a beautiful film with everything I have. Our desire was to make the final crew of the USS Indianapolis proud.” says the passionate French producer.

“USS Indianapolis” opens August 24 in cinemas from Pioneer Films.

20th Century Fox NEXT STEP IN HUMAN EVOLUTION IN “MORGAN” [Rated R-13]

From producer Ridley Scott and director Luke Scott, “Morgan” offers a thrilling, visceral and intense movie-going experience starring Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Michelle Yeoh, Paul Giamatti, Leslie Rose and Toby Jones, “Morgan” introduces an artificial yet organic being that represents the future in human evolution.

In “Morgan” the inevitable happens, the creation surpasses its creator. The titular character “Morgan” is played by Anya Taylor-Joy a bioengineered being with synthetic DNA. At one month, she (it) was walking and talking; at six months, she exceeded her creators’ wildest expectations. Morgan is enigmatic and unpredictable—a lab-created being with emotional capacity and conflicting traits that blur the line between being human and synthetic. When “Morgan” suddenly attacked one of her handlers, the company immediately sends Lee Weathers (Kate Mara), a corporate trouble shooter who decides whether Morgan will continue to live or be terminated at once.

Luke Scott is a noted commercials director who has also worked in various capacities on his father Ridley’s epic and acclaimed films, Luke makes his feature directorial debut with “Morgan.” The story’s themes clearly resonate with the young filmmaker, whose short film, “Loom,” shot on 4K 3D, was a kind of precursor to “Morgan.” Starring Giovanni Ribisi, the short was about a man hiding an artificial being in a genetics workshop.

Some of the ideas explored in Loom were expanded upon in screenwriter Seth Owen’s original script for “Morgan,” which entered the prestigious film industry “Black List” in 2014—compiled annually from the suggestions of more than 250 film executives who contribute names of their favorite scripts written that year.

Scott was intrigued by Owens’ unusual approach to some of the big scientific questions of our time: if artificial intelligence becomes as smart, if not smarter than humans, then what do we have to offer? Would artificial beings like Morgan be the next leap in our evolution?

Even more significantly, Scott wondered, “What motivates us to synthetically produce or reproduce a human being? These are issues that encompass faith, morality, science and technology.”

To further explore and immerse himself in this bleeding-edge research, Scott visited Queens University’s microbiology labs. There, he learned that investigations in this area, though pervasive in the scientific community, were still taboo outside the halls of academia and laboratories—and that advances in this field were happening at warp speed. “It’s all pretty remarkable,” says Scott, whose penetrating queries sometimes caught the labs’ professors off guard.

“Morgan” opens September 7 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Pioneer Films: “USS INDIANAPOLIS: MEN OF COURAGE” IN TROUBLED WATERS AT PHILIPPINE SEA

Based on true accounts of those who have survived during the waning days of World War II, the thrilling and inspiring “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” tells of the Navy warship USS Indianapolis that secretly delivered one of two atomic bombs that would eventually end the war.

“USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage,” stars Nicolas Cage, Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter, Brian Presley and Cody Walker and directed by Mario Van Peebles. When the Japanese learned of the USS Indianapolis within reach, they attacked and sank the heavy cruiser. The USS Indianapolis’ mission was so classified it was not reported missing, and no one knew the ship had been attacked until four days later. Stranded in the shark-infested waters of the Philippine Sea, the remaining survivors of the USS Indianapolis endured hunger, thirst, heat, delirium, relentless shark attacks and the death of many shipmates. Of the 1,197 crewmembers, nearly 300 went down with the ship. Five days later only 317 men survived and were eventually rescued.

Long before the cameras rolled, Richard Rionda Del Castro and Cam Cannon of Hannibal Classics decided to write the script for “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage.” They wanted to tell the real story of what happened to the ship’s crewmembers just after midnight on that fateful day, 30 July 1945. "I produced this film to pay homage to the final crew of the USS Indianapolis, to acknowledge and honor them, along with their families,” says Rionda Del Castro. “To make sure new generations, worldwide, would learn of their harrowing and heroic saga, forever.”

They did exhaustive research, with survivors, the US Navy, court documents and historical papers. In their research, they discovered the Second Watch organization formed by the family members, friends and supporters of the men of the USS Indianapolis. Their mission statement reads, Although the USS Indianapolis (CA35) died at sea, the memory of her crew lives.

Five years and 200 drafts later, Hannibal’s script was ready. The search for the right director began. Mario Van Peebles, who had worked with Hannibal previously, expressed tremendous interest in the film, Van Peebles knew he had to tell the crewmen’s story, and lobbied hard to direct the film. For the part of Captain Charles Butler McVay, both Hannibal and Van Peebles agreed Nicholas Cage would be perfect. According to Van Peebles “Cage has a sense of command, a wicked sense of humor, is super professional, and is on the ball.”

“One of my dreams, my first love, has always been the ocean,” says Cage. “I have always dreamed of doing a film on the ocean. I had to get on the water, and Richard said ‘it just so happens I have a script.” Cage agreed to be the films’ anchor. Cage further shares, “My impression on meeting these survivors, was that they were, they are, remarkably strong willful people. The fact they are still with us . . . We wanted to honor them. They are true heroes.”

OctoArts Films International: MERYL STREEP IN THE INSPIRING TRUE STORY “FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS” [G]

From Pioneer Films - JENNIFER GARNER STARS IN HEARTWARMING MAGICAL FAMILY MOVIE “NINE LIVES”

Award-winning actress Jennifer Garner, who recently starred in the endearing faith-based movie “Miracles from Heaven” stars anew in “Nine Lives,” an inspiring magical family movie about a work-obsessed real-estate mogul who suffers a magical accident that leaves him trapped inside the body of a cat and realizes he has to put his family first if he ever hopes to regain his human form.

“Nine Lives” also stars award-winning Kevin Spacey as Tom Brand who is undeniably successful, impossibly wealthy but is an unapologetic jerk. Striving to build the tallest skyscraper in the Northern Hemisphere, the daredevil billionaire will sacrifice anything — even the love of his family — to complete an architectural marvel nearly as gargantuan as his ego. Tom’s workaholic lifestyle has alienated his long-suffering family, including his devoted wife Lara (Garner), neglected adult son David (Robbie Amell) and starved-for-attention young daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman).

When Rebecca’s 11th birthday arrives, the girl begs her father for the same present she asks for every year: a cat. Tom hates cats, but reluctantly finds himself in a magical pet shop owned by the quirky Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken). The peculiar proprietor knows exactly what Brand needs — and its name is Mr. Fuzzypants. After suffering a fateful accident on the way to Rebecca’s birthday party, a horrified Tom discovers that while his human form is lying comatose in a hospital bed, he is watching events unfold from inside the body of the cat. Trapped inside Mr. Fuzzypants and trying desperately to make his loved ones aware of his situation, he soon realizes that if he is ever to earn back his human existence, he must reconnect with his family and become the husband and father they deserve.

At the heart of his family is his beautiful, understanding wife Lara. Director Sonnenfeld says that as soon as he read the script he formed a mental image of the actress who would portray the character. “Jennifer Garner was always my first choice to play Kevin’s wife,” he explains. “She’s beautiful, strong and funny — qualities that don’t always go together.”

The actress is happy to be at the center of the film’s three-ring circus. “I am the poor mom at home with a husband in a coma, a confused daughter — and a cat who’s acting crazy, getting drunk and being totally wild and inappropriate,” she laughs. “And I’m trying to figure it all out.”

“Lara is pretty even keeled,” she adds. “She’s warm, sensible, loving — but she’s fed up with her husband. I think Lara and Tom have a real marriage and that she genuinely loves him. She’s starting to try to set boundaries, saying, ‘This is not enough for me, and it’s certainly not enough for our daughter, so you better show up.’ And he just fails again and again.”

Jennifer Garner is confident that moviegoers of all ages will enjoy the film. “I don’t think audiences can help having a great time hearing Kevin Spacey’s droll, grumpy cat voice come out of Mr. Fuzzypants,” she says. “With Kevin as the cat, we were all in stitches. Between Christopher Walken, the beautiful Malina, and the wonderful Robbie Amell and Mark Consuelos, this movie is in good shape. It’s incredibly watchable, and funny and warm.”

“Nine Lives” opens August 17 in cinemas nationwide from Pioneer Films.
